By request Black Cat Theater is holding an additional night for auditions for their Fall production of ONCE UPON A MATTRESS directed by Stephanie Flinker with Alexa Flinker as Music Director. We will be putting a new twist to this iconic show in that it will be an all adult cast (ages 19-90+) only. Auditions for this show will be held on Wednesday, May 29th at 6:00pm in Kidder Hall, All Saints Church, 7 Woodbridge Street, South Hadley.

All roles are open. (For synopsis scroll to bottom.) Interested candidates should bring with them a short biographical sketch (headshot optional) and be prepared to perform a short musical piece. There may also be readings from the script.

Each named role has a specific song (listed below) they will be asked to sing from the show. No a cappella please.

     “Shy” (meas. 25-78)

“Song of Love” (meas. 24-72 – all of the melody including chorus)

“In A Little While” (Meas. 11-26)

     “Sensitivity” (meas. 11-37)

     “Prologue” (meas. 5-26)

     “Very Soft Shoes” (meas. 51-79)

“Opening for a Princess” (meas. 27-51 or any song listed above.)

Musical accompaniment will be provided.

Mattress is expected to be produced at South Hadley High School in mid-November. Rehearsals are primarily on Monday and Thursday evenings (with occasional Wednesdays) starting September 9th.

If unavailable to be seen in person please email blackcattheater@gmail.com or leave a message at 413-563-6023.

If you thought you knew the story of “The Princess and The Pea,” you may be in for a walloping surprise! Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken's love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste?  Or that, in fact, it wasn't the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night?  Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you'll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.
